Founded in 1257 on lands granted by the municipality of Évora to Estêvão Eanes, chancellor to King Afonso III, the village has been known by various names over time until adopting its current designation in the 18th century. Today, it preserves the authenticity of a place where time moves slowly and the past intertwines with new stories.It is within this setting that The Green House emerges, the latest project from the owners of the award-winning Santiago de Alfama – Boutique Hotel in Lisbon. Manuel Rosa da Silva and Heleen Uitenbroek have brought to the Alentejo the same philosophy that earned their Lisbon property distinctions from Condé Nast Johansens. The goal is clear: to combine the charm of rural life with the sophistication of award-winning hospitality.

It all began with Heleen Uitenbroek, originally from the Netherlands, who spent much of her childhood and youth in New Zealand. Yet it was in Portugal that she chose to put down roots and build her life project alongside her husband, Manuel.Together, they are the owners of Santiago de Alfama, a five-star boutique hotel in Lisbon, recently awarded TripAdvisor’s Best World’s Luxury Hotel 2025. Although they did not come from the hospitality or restaurant industry, Heleen and Manuel have always nurtured a genuine passion for welcoming, caring, and creating authentic experiences.It is this very passion that has led them to take a new step—this time into the heart of the Alentejo.
